Often I get asked the question, “Do I need a leadership coach?” I’m pleased to share my thoughts with you here.
Imagine you are driving a car somewhere between your office and your home. All of the sudden, your car starts making loud noises and shaking like crazy, forcing you to pull to the side of the road.
Perhaps you Google for answers about the spontaneous symptoms of your car, but once you realize you are at a dead end with your understanding, where do you go next? An auto mechanic, right? Someone who has dedicated his entire life to understanding the mechanics of automobiles. Someone who has logged their 10,000+ hours in this field.
As a business person, you already know that time is your greatest currency. So, in this car situation you wisely use money to simply buy someone else’s time. Someone else who has already used their currency of time to specialize in something you have not.
This is the way it works for so many things in your life: cars, brain surgery, computers, sky diving, you name it. You use your money to buy someone else’s time. Guess what? The mechanics of leadership & management are just as complex as cars and brain surgery. And, the good news is that there are people who have dedicated their lives to understanding leadership & management the same way your auto mechanic is dedicated to the inner workings of automobiles.
This is why Leadership Coaching is critical to anyone who wants to increase their performance in business. Someone else who has already spent their 10,000+ hours in learning the mechanics of leadership.
The same principal holds true for non-business related topics, like marriage counseling and children’s behavioral therapy. You would spend your time and your money on both of those things if it meant saving your family, right?
So, when you hit that point in business and you find yourself asking, “Do I need to hire a leadership coach?”, you need to think back to your shaking car. Is there someone who is more specialized on the topic of engaging a team more than you? If you are not getting the desired results you want right now, it may be time to hire an expert who specializes in their craft so you can get back to specializing in yours.
